Happy Holidays! Year in Review - Chicago Newborn and Family Photographer

Aren't the holidays always a whirlwind?? I spent a lovely week in Michigan with my family and was able to take some cute shots of my sister and niece in a snowball fight, and also had waaaay to many cookies and pieces of pie!

I also had the whole week off to look forward to the new year and to brainstorm ideas to improve my business in 2014. I am going to focus more on newborns as well as offer some great canvas and print package options. There will also be a mini session sometime around Valentine's Day, so keep an eye on the blog and facebook page for more info :-)

Here are some of my favorite images from 2013 and I look forward to meeting lots of new little babies and creating lasting relationships with families. Happy New Year!

My 3 Best Secrets For Getting Newborn Babies to Sleep - Chicago Newborn Baby Photographer

I absolutely love newborn sessions. I get my baby fix and am able to create beautiful images for my clients. I have always been pretty good with kids and babies, but trying to photograph newborns is a whole different game.

One of my first sessions was a bit of a disaster- the baby would not fall asleep, so creating those cute little squishy poses was out of the question. The mom and I tried wrapping, swaying, bouncing, feeding, burping, you name it and this little girl was not going to sleep. It took almost 2 hours before she finally wore her self out and slept. For fifteen minutes. This is what we all felt like by the end:

I tried to view that session as a learning experience and then threw myself into gaining as much information about newborn photography as possible. Over the following months, I watched countless tutorials, read blogs and articles about newborn safety, joined facebook groups, and had many new little clients along the way.

Here are my 3 best secrets for getting newborns to sleep during a photo shoot:

1. Turn up the HEAT! Ideally, you want the studio to be around 80-85 degrees and have a space heater nearby for added warmth. Not sure your room is warm enough? Spend a few minutes in the studio prepping and organizing your props. If you start sweating, baby is likely to be a happy client.
Be sure to tell the parents that the room will be very warm so they can plan their wardrobe accordingly. Breastfeeding moms are more easily dehydrated so always offer something to drink when the session starts. (I always have a pitcher of lemon water or Vitamin Water handy)

2. HUSH little baby. While babies are in the womb they become accustomed to all sorts of sounds- heartbeat, digestion, mom's voice, etc. Once they are born, white noise can be extremely calming, especially those that mimic the sounds they have heard for the past 9 months. I use the white noise baby app, and keep it on for the entire session. I usually have it on my phone and place it under the blankets or behind whatever prop the baby is in. A shushing sound also works wonders, and don't be afraid to get kind of loud. "SHHHHH" near the baby's ear can be very relaxing to a fussy newborn.

3. Take a breath and RELAX. Babies are great at picking up queues in their environment, including stress and tension. When mom and dad (or you) are stressed, the baby will certainly sense that and show her frustration. New parents are understandably a little tense when they are asked to hand over their most precious cargo, but try to reassure them that the baby is in good hands. Make sure you have seating nearby so their little one is always in sight. I usually have mom sit in for the first couple poses so she is comfortable and then suggest that she go relax on the couch, catch up on some sleep, watch tv, or whatever she has been missing the last week since the baby was born. I have had quite a few moms take me up on my napping offer :-)

Every newborn photographer has had a session where the baby just does not want to sleep. Mom says something like "He is never like this!" and the frustration keeps growing. Take a moment to think about how you can make the environment more calm and soothing for everyone and the session will go smoother. While each baby is unique, the advice above can be applied in almost every session and will help you to create images that the family will cherish forever!

Baby Abigail- Chicago Newborn Baby Photographer

I had the pleasure of spending the morning with this little darling. Abigail was such a sweetheart, and so tiny! Only 6.5 pounds and nine days new. She spent a while looking around the studio before finally getting too tired to keep her eyes open. Abby was the first newborn to try out the baby bed prop and she loved snuggling under the snowflakes. Congrats to the V family on their very sweet new addition!

Baby Ava- Chicago Newborn Baby Photographer

Welcome to the world, Baby Ava! This little sweetheart was only 4 days old when I photographed her. She was wide awake for the first hour, just taking it all in, and didn't mind Mom and I trying out different headbands to go with her full head of hair. After she got a bit to eat, and a few cuddles, she fell asleep for the rest of the session. I loved spending the morning with little Ava and her wonderful family, and hope to see them again soon.

What do I wear for the photo shoot??

Many clients ask what they should wear for the photo shoot, and I always try to steer them clear of anything too matchy (let's avoid family portraits with white shirts and khakis :-) The best thing to do is to find one piece of clothing that you love and to coordinate everything else around that. In the example below, mom's dress is the piece that pulls all the other looks together, creating a very chic and stylish family!

Baby Skyler

It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks in the windy city! I am still getting settled and unfortunately my U-Box from Uhaul is already 5 days late with no word on when it will arrive... In the meantime, I have been able to book a couple newborn sessions and look forward to meeting more beautiful little babies like Skyler. She was fighting with all her might to stay awake at the beginning of the session. I was able to capture some nice photos with her eyes open looking right at the camera before she got too upset and needed a little snack and nap :-)

Big News!

I am happy to announce that my official website is up and running! Check it out here. I'd love to hear what you think.

In other big news, I am moving back to Chicago in a few weeks! I will certainly miss the warm weather and these wonderful people, but I am looking forward to meeting new clients and growing my business in the Midwest. I have a few more sessions before I leave, including a newborn photo shoot with a previous family I photographed earlier this summer. All very exciting :-)

Happy First Birthday, E!

Get ready for a cuteness-overload! This little princesa was such a joy to photograph. She spent a lot of time looking right at the camera, which allowed me to catch some great portraits, and some very sweet mother-daughter moments. Even though it was still early in the morning, the heat index was near 100 degrees, and we all didn't last very long before calling it a day. I love the last shot with baby E throwing up her arms, "I'm done!" :-)

Sibling Session

Sorry for the delay in posts! I have had a busy few weeks catching up on editing sessions, sewing new items for my etsy shop (magnoliababyboutique.etsy.com), and studying for a big social work exam! I had the pleasure of meeting this sweet little family and got some great shots of these little girls and their great mom. We spent some time exploring the pavilions at Matheson Hammock Park and found a lovely spot under a large tree.

Jukes Family Session- Chicago Maternity and Family Photographer

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting the Jukes Family at Matheson Hammock Park for a lovely evening photo shoot. Their son was one of the best little models around, always looking at the camera with a big smile on his face! Makes my job so easy :-) Everyone is very excited for the arrival of their new baby girl due later this summer.

Happy First Birthday, J!

I had the pleasure of spending a warm and (very) humid morning with this little guy and his amazing parents! We spent some time exploring Amelia Earhart Park, watching the geese waddle along the path, and ended up under the shade of the "Farm Village" houses. Baby J was such a sweet and adorable boy and his parents were GREAT at getting him to laugh and smile. Happy first birthday!

If you haven't been to Amelia Earhart Park, I highly recommend spending an afternoon or two taking advantage of all the activities here (fishing, disc golf, petting zoo, mountain biking, paddle boats, picnics, farm village, dog park)!

E&A Maternity Session - Chicago Maternity Photographer

After one rain delay and a few sprinkles the next morning, we were finally able to get some great sunrise photos on Miami Beach. At one point the sun broke through the clouds and a beautiful rainbow appeared! The mom-to-be had a great idea to wear an adorable bathing suit to take a retro, pin-up style portrait which I think turned out great. The parents-to-be were both so sweet and are excited to meet their little girl later this summer.

J&S Maternity Session- Chicago Maternity Photographer

We started this photo shoot by heading to some favorite spots around the couple's home (check out that tree!), and ended up at Matheson Hammock to watch the sun go down. The mom-to-be is due in June and looks incredible. She brought along a beautiful Vietnamese umbrella which was a perfect prop near the water. Can't wait to meet this baby girl in a few weeks!

About Me

Photographing children can be quite an adventure, but I enjoy every bit of the process. My goal is to capture your child's personality, not fake smiles or uncomfortable poses. I am very patient and understand that each child requires a unique approach in order to make them feel at ease.

I have been photographing newborns and children for the past 5 years. I have taken pictures in many different settings; from an 18-year old senior portrait session, to a 3-year old birthday party, to a 3-day old newborn session at home, and everything in between.

I would love to capture cherished moments for you and your family.

I am able to travel to your home for newborn and child portraits or meet at another location within 20 miles of zip code 33131
